Overview
The Society for Irish Latin
American Studies is pleased to announce that the second SILAS
conference will be held on 15-18 July 2009 at Morelia,
Mexico. The conference will be organised by SILAS together
with the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, and will be joined by researchers, students and independent
scholars to share their work on different aspects of
Irish-Latin American relations.
The first SILAS conference, Adventurers, Emissaries
and Settlers: Ireland and Latin America was held on
27-30 June 2007 in Galway. The conference was the first of
its kind, and included perspectives on the multitudinous connections
between Latin America and Ireland mainly in history and
literature. The SILAS conference took place concurrently and
in conjunction with the Fifth Galway Conference on
Colonialism.
Under the general title
"Heroes, victims or villains? Irish Presentations and
Representations in Latin America and the Caribbean", the
second SILAS conference proposes to foster international and
multidisciplinary approaches to the study of connections
between Ireland, Latin America, the Caribbean and Iberia.
