| Según
la leyenda, el mismo año de la primera fundación de Buenos
Aires, el Capitán Pedro de Luxán fue muerto por los indios
a orillas del río que tomaría su nombre. En 1615 se estableció
el primer núcleo poblacional en la intersección del camino
de Buenos Aires con el cruce del Río Luján. Quince años después,
unas carretas que transportaban la imagen de la Inmaculada
Concepción quedaron inexplicablemente detenidas en el lugar
donde actualmente se levanta la ciudad. En 1730 se creó el
curato de Luján y un año más tarde comenzó a trazarse el pueblo. |

En Mercedes
está la catedral de San Patricio, patrono de la ciudad.
A esa diócesis pertenece Luján. Por ello la iglesia de Luján
no es Catedral sino Basílica. Las basílicas son iglesias
de gran importancia (San Pedro - Vaticano), pero no catedrales.
La catedral es la residencia del Obispo, el cual, en nuestro
caso, reside en Mercedes. [2] |
