The Makarte/McCarthy family honoured
by the Irish Ambassador
to Argentina
The distant link between two branches of the McCarthy family in
Ireland and Argentina was acknowledged during a ceremony held at the Irish Embassy in Buenos Aires
on Wednesday, 2 July 2008. SILAS
Founding Member Peter Mulvany researched the Society's databases and
other sources and established a relationship between his family in
Ireland and members of the Makarte (McCarthy) family in Argentina. The
correspondence developed and both branches could finally united
symbolically through the event at the embassy. In 1889 John McCarthy, his wife Mary, née Callaghan,
and their five children emigrated to Argentina in the SS Dresden.
More children were born in the Balcarce district of Buenos Aires province.
In 1905 Patricio and Timoteo McCarthy were brought to Ireland. As adults both went to sea,
serving in the catering departments of various national and
international shipping lines. Timoteo [Timothy] McCarthy served on the
Muirchu during 1939 until the handover to the Irish Department
of Defence. He also served with distinction on Irish merchant ships
throughout World War II and died at sea in August 1960. His brother
Patricio (Patrick) McCarthy is the only Argentine lost on an Irish
registered vessel during World War II. On 24 February 2002 his
grand-nephew Peter Mulvany was presented the Irish marine valour medal
with three bars and citation, awarded posthumously by the Irish
Government to Patricio McCarthy (see the pages of the Irish
Seamen's Relatives Association 1939-46). H.E. Ambassador Murnaghan
extended the presentation to the Argentine branch of the family,
represented by Jorge Oscar Makarte. Present at the event were the
Irish Ambassador and SILAS Honorary Member Philomena Murnaghan, SILAS
Directors Hilda Sabato and Guillermo MacLoughlin, SILAS Members Juan
Pablo Alvarez Pearce and Derek Lambe as well as members of Jorge
Makarte's family.

Human Rights activist
in Argentina conferred honorary degree at University College Cork
|

Justin Harman (left), secretary at the
embassy of Ireland to Argentina in 1976, and Patrick Rice, LL.D.
(University College Cork, 2008) |
On 6 June 2008, during a ceremony in the
grounds of UCC, Patrick Rice was bestowed with an honorary Degree of
Doctor of Laws by the National University of Ireland. Over the past
forty years Patrick Rice contributed to the enforcement of Latin
American and international human rights. When working as a religious
missionary in the shanty towns of Buenos Aires, Rice was kidnapped and
tortured between October and December 1976 during the military
dictatorship in Argentina. His life was saved by Irish diplomatic
representatives in Argentina and international support. After this
experience Patrick Rice has become a highly respected human rights
activist and helped to found FEDEFAM, a humanitarian organisation
representing the families of the disappeared in Latin America and the
Caribbean. He was also appointed a member of the United Nations
Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.
