Admiral Brown Memorial Park
A Place in Ireland to Cherish the Irish in Latin America
In Argentina, more than a few cities, parks, streets, and soccer clubs bear the name of the founder of the Argentine Navy, William Brown (1777-1857), who was born in Foxford, Co. Mayo. This extensive Brownian toponymy has more to do with local politics than with the Irish emigration to Argentina, so we decided to include here the only memorial to Admiral Brown in Ireland. Thanks to institutional efforts and to the tireless motivation of J. J. O'Hara and other members of the Admiral Brown Society, the 'Admiral Brown Memorial Park' is being built in Foxford. The park will house a museum and visitors' centre in Brown's hometown. In the meantime, they organised the exhibition which follows. If you are interested on Admiral Brown's life, one of the best books about him (in English) was written by John de Courcy Ireland, The Admiral from Mayo: A life of Almirante William Brown from Foxford (Dublin: Eamonn de Burca, 1995).
